5 Preparations to Make Before Relocating Your Lab

It’s important to have a clear plan in place when preparing to relocate your lab.

If you’re the manager of the research arm of a pharmaceutical or biotech company, you understand just how important it is to conduct your tests and research in an appropriate space. Moving into a new facility may be necessary at times in order to keep up with the demands of growth and accomplish the goals of your organization. But relocating a lab can be costly and threaten continuity in your research aims. It’s important to have a clear plan in place when preparing to relocate your lab. Here are five preparations you should be making beforehand.

1. Taking a Comprehensive Inventory

In order to ensure a successful relocation, you’ll need to understand what exactly you’re working with. Taking a complete inventory of both your hazardous and non-hazardous materials will allow you to make sound decisions about how to approach a move. By understanding the risks associated with such material, you can go on to hire the kind of movers who are qualified to handle this kind of material in a proper manner.

2. Dispose of Materials You Don’t Need

Why spend the time, effort, and money moving materials you don’t actually need? Once you’ve taken stock of your inventory, you can go about properly disposing of any materials that you don’t need to take to your new location. This will allow you to mitigate some of the risks involved in relocating a lab and streamline the moving process, effectively reducing your facility’s downtime.

3. Building a Project Team

A relocation project team is essential for a smooth relocation and this team should consist of both people within your organization and people outside of it. This team should be responsible for all planning, permitting, and document collection necessary before the move. Having members on this team with lab relocation experience and familiarity with the regulations surrounding it is critical. An environmental management agency, such as AEG Environmental, on your side will prove invaluable during the project planning stages.

4. Developing a Plan

Once your team is built, you can start developing a comprehensive plan for relocating the lab. All aspects of the move should be accounted for in this plan, including meetings with staff, budget, reporting metrics, and expectations before, during, and after the move date.

5. Prepare for the Unexpected

Even the best laid plans can be subject to shocks and surprises, and relocating a lab is no different. Anything, from equipment availability to the weather, can impact your move.  A certain level of flexibility, coupled with consistent communication practices, will help you weather these changes and make your lab relocation successful.
