Can My Hazardous Waste Containers Be Recycled?

Some waste containers can actually be recycled in order to reduce environmental impact.

As a business owner, you want to do whatever you can to reduce your business’s impact on the environment. Hopefully, you’ve already taken the first step by partnering with AEG Environmental for your hazardous waste disposal company. We all know that plastic and other materials used for containers are not good for the environment, so you may be wondering: can hazardous waste containers be recycled?

RCRA Emptiness

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) dictates different standards for containers to be considered empty. Those standards vary widely based on what the containers are made of and what they are lined with. Just because something looks empty to you doesn’t mean it’s RCRA-empty! Need help with your RCRA training? Call AEG Environmental today!

Reuse, Re-Purpose, or Dispose?

Once you’ve made sure that your containers are indeed empty, what’s next? Well, some can be reused, others re-purposed for another task, and some will just need to be disposed of. If you’re going to reuse, it is safest to do so with the same substance that was in the container before it was emptied.

If you cannot find a way to reuse the container, you may be able to re-purpose it and use it for something else. If it can’t be re-conditioned and re-purposed, many containers can be recycled. For example, once emptied and properly cleaned, metal containers can be recycled as scrap metal.

Finally, if a container cannot be re-used, re-conditioned, or recycled it should be disposed of. The regulations for the safe disposal of industrial waste vary from state to state. Before disposing of your containers, it’s best to acquaint yourself with these rules. If you’re at all unsure of what to do with your hazardous waste or its containers, contact AEG Environmental today, and we will eliminate all of that guesswork and make sure everything is properly taken care of!
