RCRA Hazardous Waste Listing

Knowing the characteristics of the different hazardous waste lists is essential!

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is the EPA’s rulebook that governs all aspects of hazardous waste handling and disposal. Compliance with these rules is essential, and non-compliance carries some pretty hefty fines. One of the many things dictated in the RCRA is the four different categories of “listed wastes”. These categories include the F, K, P, and U lists. While all of the wastes on these lists are hazardous in some way, each list separates hazardous wastes by their individual characteristics. A thorough understanding of these lists and why things are classified this way can be extremely helpful!

F-Listed Hazardous Waste

F-listed wastes can come from a wide variety of sources, such as government or manufacturing facilities or even schools. The F-list has seven different sub-categories, which range from general solvents to more specific materials:

The full list of all seven categories and 39 wastes on the F-list can be found on the EPA’s website.

K-Listed Hazardous Waste

The K-list of hazardous wastes gets far more specific about its sources. This list is separated into 13 subcategories and includes over 140 different wastes. Some of the K-list subcategories include:

P-Listed and U-Listed Hazardous Wastes

The P-list and U-list cover unused chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. The P-list alone covers well over 200 substances, with more than 130 different waste codes. Some of these substances include:

U-list wastes are all toxic and should be handled with extreme caution. A couple of these include Aniline, Acrylonitrile, and Acetone.
