What is Waste-to-Energy?

Waste-to-Energy (WtE) is a process by which approved non-hazardous wastes are incinerated at a state-of-the-art facility. In turn, the facility generates electricity from the incineration process. This process is proven to promote sustainability by putting waste to productive use rather than relegating it to a landfill.

Why is WtE better than standard disposal options like landfilling and incineration?

There are many reasons why it simply makes more sense to use your waste to create energy. As populations increase, landfill space is becoming more scarce so it can be difficult to accommodate all of the waste that is created. In addition, incineration can cause environmental concerns. WtE provides the ideal, sustainable solution.

Benefits of WtE include:

  • Reduces landfill mass by up to 90%.
  • Avoids greenhouse gasses.
  • Promotes sustainability.
  • Is a safe and reliable disposal option.
  • Generates electricity for over 2 million homes nationwide.
  • Reduces the user’s carbon footprint.
  • Recycles ferrous metals.
  • Reduces liability from standard PRP litigation from landfills.

Given the many benefits of WtE, it is no wonder why more and more facilities are beginning to turn to this process to handle their nonhazardous waste in a way that is environmentally responsible and beneficial.

What does the EPA say?

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection agency, Waste-to-Energy facilities are a “clean, reliable, renewable source of energy” that “produce megawatts of electricity with less environmental impact than almost any other source of electricity.” In addition, they add that communities can “greatly benefit from a dependable, sustainable (solid-waste disposal) capacity of municipal waste-to-energy plants.” Thanks in part to the EPA’s endorsement, WtE is becoming an increasingly popular waste management solution.

Isn’t WtE expensive?

With the new nationwide program from AEG Environmental, this process is now affordable!
