The Basics of Lab Packing

Lab packing is a service that involves sorting, characterizing, inventorying, packaging, and disposing of lots of small amounts of different chemicals. It is one of the most common, but technically demanding, services that hazardous waste management companies offer. Lab packing ensures that chemical waste is disposed of safely and efficiently and that all US Department of Transportation rules are followed during transit of chemicals. Whether you’re just clearing out or completely moving your storeroom, warehouse, or laboratory, there are 4 basic things you should know about lab packing.

Follow Regulations

Before they can be shipped, the chemicals need to be organized according to hazard class, packing group, and proper shipping name. Federal regulations state that if 2 substances have different hazard classes, packing groups, and/or proper shipping names, that they cannot share a container for transport or disposal. However, there are some hazard classes that can be safely grouped together.

It is important that you choose an educated, experienced lab packing provider to help you safely transport and dispose of your chemical waste. This ensures the safety of you, your company, and your employees.

Keep Incompatible Substances Separated

It is the job of your lab pack chemists to identify and properly separate each substance based on the US Department of Transportation’s regulations. This means that they need to pay close attention to ALL of the details of the substances they are going through. Many flammable substances can’t be packaged with other chemicals because they are in different hazard classes. Your lab pack chemist will keep track of all of the relevant rules so that your materials can be safely transported and disposed of.

Trust the Professionals

The lab packing process involves the use of many small containers. In order to be successful, it relies heavily on the technical and chemical expertise of the on-site chemists. Properly separating chemical wastes requires quite a bit of experience in chemical transportation and disposal, careful examination of container labels, and in-depth research of safety data sheets (formerly known as material safety data sheets or MSDSs).
