Creating a Chemical Hygiene Plan for Your Company

If your company doesn’t have a Chemical Hygiene Plan in place yet, then it’s time to create one.

Creating a safe work environment should be one of your highest priorities. OSHA has outlined a standard called the Laboratory Standard, which is intended to protect lab workers from exposure to toxic chemicals. If your company doesn’t have a Chemical Hygiene Plan in place yet, then it’s time to create one.

What is The Plan For?

This is a written plan designed to protect all of your employees while they go about their daily tasks. This means that all policies, procedures, and protocols relating to possible health hazards must be outlined and made clear. There are twelve different sections that are part of the chemical hygiene plan. Some examples include:

What Should Go Into It?

Part of the chemical hygiene plan is what you should do every day. In other words, you will outline your standard operating procedures. These procedures will depend on what you are working with – for example, mercury and acids behave very differently and you would need to account for their different chemical properties and the risks they present to your employees’ health.

Responding to Emergencies

Accidents happen. Unfortunately, when an accident at a chemical plant or waste disposal facility happens, it will often become an emergency situation. In your chemical hygiene plan, you need to outline what will be done in an emergency situation. If the chemical waste is spilled while being moved to a different part of your facility, what happens next? You need to outline solutions for containing the spill, protecting anyone who might be exposed to it, and how to clean up the spill and dispose of anything that was touched by the waste.

Managing Chemicals

The last part of the plan involves chemical management. How will you identify potential hazards? What will your labels look like? How secure are your containers? These are all questions that must be addressed in your CHP.
