Creating a Hazardous Material Disaster Contingency Plan

You do everything you can to make sure your employees stay safe with regards to equipment and proper protective gear, but what do you do if something goes wrong?

Dealing with hazardous materials can be dangerous. You do everything you can to make sure your employees stay safe with regards to equipment and proper protective gear, but what do you do if something goes wrong? You will need to have a plan that outlines protocols and procedures to be followed in the event of a disaster.

What Qualifies as a Disaster?

For starters, you will need to determine what you would consider to be a disaster situation. Whether it is some sort of natural disaster, or something related to human or machine error, you will need to figure out the criteria for a situation to necessitate an emergency response.

Determine Who is Responsible

Every organization has an established structure of authority: President, Vice President, and so on. So, when a disaster strikes, it needs to be clear who is in charge. If someone is absent, who will be making decisions in their place? Who has what job or jobs with regards to managing the disaster? These things and more should be included in your plan.

Develop the Plan

Once you know what sort of situations you will need to prepare for, come up with a plan for how you will deal with them. Your plan should involve clear instructions for who is supposed to what and at which points during the incident. No detail can be overlooked, because oversights can become a legal liability later, not to mention jeopardize the safety of your company and its surrounding community.

Keep it Simple

Every step of your contingency plan should be broken down into small, easily executed steps. In a potentially-tense disaster situation, you will want the directions to be extremely easy to follow to minimize potential fallout.

Practice and Evolve

Lastly, and probably most importantly, you MUST practice. Just like school children have fire drills, you will need to run through your contingency plan. Your business is constantly evolving and your contingency plan will need to grow and change with it in order to make sure everyone involved remains safe.
