Eventually, you will need to perform a chemical inventory. This is a helpful way to determine what chemicals you have on hand and which ones you need to place orders for. No matter how large or small they are, all labs need sufficient supplies. If you need to perform such an inventory, then here are a couple of questions you need to ask.

How Long Ago Did You Have One?

Every industry has its own set of regulations when it comes to correctly handling chemicals. Either way, holding off on performing an inventory is ill-advised. How long has it been since your last inventory? Let’s argue that you don’t know – or your records don’t go back that far. In this case, it’s probably a good idea to schedule another one for some time in the near future. Updating your records is also something we suggest you do. Did you have any partners who handled the documentation for you? If so, you may need to get in touch with them to see if they have any relevant records that you can fall back on. Running an inventory several times a year – such as at the end of every quarter – may sound like a nuisance, but it can be more beneficial than you might think.

The Importance of Onsite Storage

You need to have onsite storage that is easily accessible but is also kept secure enough to prevent accidents, sabotage, or theft. While offsite storage has its merits, in this instance it will only present another hurdle to overcome. Keep detailed records both in hard copy and in digital archives in case of emergency situations that could arise.

What’s the Reason This Time?

The other question you need to ask is why you need the inventory this time around.  The simple fact is, you need to perform one so you know what you have – not being able to recognize the materials and substances on hand in your facility is a bad sign. You can ensure the next shipment brings you the supplies, equipment, and chemicals that you need to carry out your experiments. Don’t miss a deadline, as it could hinder progress and cause you to fall behind on certain benchmarks.
