How to Prepare for Moving Your Lab

How to Prepare for Moving Your Lab

Moving your lab isn’t as simple as packing and labeling boxes.

If you work with hazardous materials in a lab, you know that it is essential to make sure everything is done with safety in mind. At some point, you may need to relocate to a different facility. Moving your lab isn’t as simple as packing and labeling boxes. If you’re preparing to move your lab, you need to have a proper plan in place beforehand.

Build A Thorough Inventory

A good place to start is to take a thorough inventory of your entire lab. You will want to catalog both hazardous and non-hazardous materials so that you can figure out how to approach moving them. It is important to know which materials will need to be moved so that you can assess any potential risks and hire the right lab relocation team.

Dispose of Anything You No Longer Need

If you find that you no longer need something, just get rid of it. There’s no reason to go through the effort to move something if you don’t even need it anymore. Once your inventory is done, you can go through it and decide what will go to the new facility and what will need to be properly disposed of. Getting rid of materials you no longer need can also help reduce downtime once you arrive at the new facility.

Finding the Right Team

Your relocation team should consist of personnel from your organization as well as outside contractors. That team will be responsible for making sure all permits and paperwork are in order before your move. Partnering with an experienced environmental management agency, such as AEG Environmental,
